EBCDIC. A character encoding scheme used by used by IBM
mainframe computers and some other computers. Unlike ASCII
, the EBCDIC standard specifies use of the entire 8 bits
of each byte. Example: in EBCDIC the number seven is
treated as a character and is encoded as: 11110111. (EBCDIC stands for
Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code.)
