Dictionary File. A special form of machine-readable codebook that
contains information about the structure of a data file and the locations
and, often, the names of variables variables in the data
file. Typically, you use a dictionary file and a data file together with
statistical software; the statistical software uses the dictionary so that
you may specify variables by name, rather than having to specify their
locations in the file.
